Rear-End Accident on 880 Due to Distracted Driver

I was traveling up highway 880 through Oakland, when I witnessed a pretty bad rear-end accident. There were three cars involved in this accident and it happened so quickly that I can not remember exactly what happened - but I do recall seeing one of the cars lift off the ground.
There was no rain, no wind, no sun in the driver's eyes. It was a perfectly normal afternoon. This leads me to believe that the driver who caused this rear-end collision was simply distracted and not paying any attention to what was happening in front of him or her. There is no other reason to rear-end someone on a perfectly straight stretch of highway 880. Perhaps the fact that it is straight allows people to think they can let their guard down. Above is a photo I took with my Blackberry - you can see that one of the cars is fairly badly damaged.
