Blind Intersections in California

Did you know that the speed limit on a "blind intersection" in California is 15 miles per hour? A "blind intersection" is defined as an intersection where there are no stop signs (or lights) and you cannot see for 100 feet in either direction during the last 100 feet before the intersection. An exampe in Oakland is the intersection of Mountain Boulevard and Avoca Avenue.
So, what that really means is that if you approach an intersection and you cannot see for more than 100 feet in any direction, slow down to 15 miles per hour (or slower). As the DMV points out in its handbook, trees, bushes and parked cars can block your view. Slow down and "inch out" into the intersection.
When drivers go too fast through these sorts of intersections, head-on collisions sometimes take place. These collisions usually involve the greatest transfer of energy - in other words, the most force.
